Dean sat nursing a bottle of beer. The x-rays were in front of him and the translation from Rufus hidden underneath it. He had read them a dozen times, but none of it made any sense. He didn't understand why these words would be carved into his ribs. It read like your normal every day spell until you got to what was written on the sternum. That was where the spell caster would put their feels about the target to make the spell stronger.
His ribs spoke of devotion and love that scared Dean greatly. He didn't know if he was ready for that kind of relationship. Dean stared at his cell phone. He knew he had to call Castiel. The thought of the angel having an actual cell phone was weird, but at least he didn't have to scream his lungs out every time he wanted to talk. Dean dialed Castiel's number and sucked in breath.
"Dean?" Castiel asked when he picked up. "Is something wrong? I am usually the one to call you."
"Rufus translated what you carved into my ribs."
"I see."
"That's it? You see? I'd like an explanation, Cas."
"In order for the spell to work properly-"
"I know all that! But, you love me, Cas? You seriously love me?"
"This isn't a conversation we should be having over the phone."
"You're right."
"I must reserve my minutes. The voice is very pushy when it comes to them."
Dean chuckled, "I'll try to help you get a better plan later. Just meet me at the Addison Motel. It's in Illinois."
The other end went dead and Dean turned around to see Castiel standing near Sam's bed. Sam went out to get dinner. Probably from one of the restaurants a few blocks away, so he won't be back that quickly. Sam's ribs read of family and apologizes, nothing near what was on Dean's.
"Cas, why?"
"Why did I fall in love with you or why did I carve that into your ribs?"
"Both, if you don't mind."
"I fell in love with you because of your convictions. You always moved forward and never gave in when Hell haunted you. You felt every burden and never grew numb. You faced Heaven and Hell for your beliefs. You still won't become Michael's vessel because you have such faith that you can change things. I was wrong when I said you have no faith. That is also why I carved that into your ribs. I was wrong and I wanted to convey that."
"You know, I really still don't believe in God though, right? I mean-"
"You have a different kind of faith, Dean. You have faith that I believe he's out there and that's enough for you. What was that talk of absentee fathers in the car?"
"Cas, if you think he's out there, I'll help you look, but that doesn't mean I have faith in him."
"You have faith in me and yourself. You have faith in humanity and faith in your family. I will say the words you said to me. Don't ever change."
